Preparedness Notes

“John Cantius Garand (January 1, 1888 – February 16, 1974) was born in St. Rémi, Quebec. John Garand designed one of America’s best known battle rifles, the M1 Garand. General Patton praised Garand’s design, writing to Chief of Ordnance Lt. Gen. Levin H. Campbell, Jr., (January 26, 1945): “The M1 rifle is the most deadly rifle in the world.”

John T. Turner says – The book is well written and concise. For anyone who has always wanted a Garand or who has one and never been instructed on the nuances of the rifle this book is essential. Plus it is much more affordable than Hatcher’s book (which is on my wish list).

Reading the book and referring back to it has help me understand the M1 Garand enough to not look like a complete idiot the first few times I took it to the range. Still, the book won’t prevent you from “Garand thumb”! That is a lesson that must be learned in person!

Anyway, if you can afford the rifle and some accessories you can afford this book. Personally, I own two Garands and each is like owning a piece of our history. Shooting them is enjoyable enough but there is a sense of our history that is profound. This rifle played a huge role in our victory in WW2. A “force multiplier” is an appropriate description.

If you’re looking for great, no-fluff info on the M1-Garand from someone who really knows his stuff, you need this book. I kept coming across the author’s name in my research, saw he had written a number of books on this topic, and decided this was a book worth owning. He’s also on the board of directors of the Garand Collectors Association. Enough said.
