Unfortunately, the number of active shooter incidents continues to rise and with that, comes in increased potential that you may someday be faced with the need to stop traumatic bleeding to save someone’s life. Add to the threat of shootings is the risk of a terrorist improvised explosive device, such as those used in the Boston Marathon bombings. Despite the risks, most people are not adequately equipped to deal with severe, life threatening, traumatic bleeding. This is a result of decades of focus on CPR training while traumatic bleeding has largely been ignored as a life saving intervention.
Many preppers and non-preppers alike carry keychain CPR barriers. However, just as important is to carry a Combat Application Tourniquet (CAT) in order to stop potentially catastrophic bleeding in arms and legs. These tourniquets can be purchased very inexpensively and are relatively small in size. I personally own the Jwxstore J0416001 from Amazon. The CAT is easy to apply and quickly stops bleeding quickly. The following video from the Mayo Clinic demonstrates proper use of the CAT.
Another critical lifesaving item for the treatment of bleeding following gunshot wounds is hemostatic powders that can be applied to a severe wound to stop bleeding. These hemostatic powders cause a chemical reaction that results in rapid clotting to stop the bleeding. I personally carry several packets of Celox brand, which can now be purchased in a pre-loaded applicator to help you accurately place the powder into a deep, severe wound, such as a gunshot. I recommend the Celox V12090 Blood Clotting Granule Applicator and Plunger Set. In addition, I recommend combining Celox powder with an Israeli Compression Bandage, which allows for the rapid application of a pressure dressing over a Celox application.
