While you may have put a lot of hours and effort into establishing your food stores, there may be times when these are inaccessible or that they run out entirely. Then you will need to feed yourself and your nearest and dearest with the resources that area around you. Something that my post below can help you do effectively.

Foraging

One of the best and most accessible ways to feed your family in the field is by foraging for food. What this means is that you look for edible items that are growing naturally in your surroundings.

Of course, to do this successfully and safely you need to have knowledge about what you can and can’t eat, what is poisonous, and how to prepare things properly.

For example, many different types of fungi grow all over the US that are edible and can be delicious like morels and chanterelles. However there are some that are deadly poisonous, such as the Chlorophyllum molybdites yet look like a common button mushroom, and that means ensuring you know the difference beforehand it absolutely essential for your family’s survival.

Of course, you can forage for all sort of things apart from mushrooms including fruits, veggies, and even some leaves and flowers like basil are edible as well. Remember too that many insects are edible and can provide a much need source of protein if you all of your other sources are exhausted.

Fishing

Next, when it comes to feeding your family in the wild, you can’t get better than a freshly caught fish. However, as many anglers will tell you actually catching one can look a lot easier than it is. In fact, it’s a combination of having the right supplies and the right skills.

In particular, it’s crucial that you include things like rods, spears, and bait in your prepping supplies, before the situation starts to escalate. You will, of course, need to research into things like what the best braided fishing line is, and which type of hooks to use to maximize your chances of making a catch. Oh, and be sure that you have a nice sharp knife to hand as well for gutting and preparing the fish without losing too much of the flesh.

It’s also very smart to do some trial runs to practice your fishing skills as well, especially if it’s not a regular hobby that you partake in. You can even head out into the wilderness with nothing but your rod to get that real sense of urgency and hunger and test your metal to see how you will really cope under this sort of pressure.

Hunting

Lastly, another option to consider in hunting animals for meat. Most people think of bringing home a buck on their back when the subject of hunting comes up, but it’s important to remember that a more holistic approach is usually the most effective. What this means is that using traps to catch small game like rabbits, as well as hunting larger beasts on occasion is usually the best method. After all, it takes up a lot less time and effort to do the former and so should ensure that the calories that you expend do not exceed what you intake, a key element of survival.
