Remember having a deep pantry isn’t just about having extra food on hand. It is also about having the means to survive in an emergency situation, having all the extra food isn’t going to do you much good if you can’t cook it when the power is out. If you are having a hard time trying to afford filling a deep pantry read my post on “having a Deep Pantry on a tight budget.”

Don’t forget to share what you were able to do this past week to have a deep pantry/food storage. Let’s encourage each other. And if you have a question feel free to ask or if you have the answer to a question feel free to answer. If you have a tip or idea you can share that also. As I said let’s make this a place where we can share and encourage others to get that deep pantry.

10 pounds powdered milk 

Wal-Mart has powdered milk 64 oz. for 15.98. According to the “Passport for Survival” nonfat powder milk will last for over 15 years when stored in a dry cool place ( some say even longer when stored correctly). Some people say to repackage your milk and some say not to. I have some several years old that I didn’t repackage and it has been fine to cook with, I don’t drink milk so I am not sure how it would taste I have heard that if you add a little vanilla and a little sugar to the old powder milk it helps with the taste if you have to drink it. (I don’t drink milk, so not sure if this really works).

Apple products

You can buy these or make and can your own, Apples are pretty inexpensive and chances are you have an apple tree or know someone who does. Apples are so versatile from pies, applesauce plain (easy recipe here) and flavored, fried apples, apple butter (recipe here), jelly jam, in cakes, in tuna, fruit leather, so many things you can do with them. They will keep several months when stored in a cool dark place.

How is the heating alternative coming along?

If you are in a smaller space you might try the tea candle and clay pot heater. I haven’t tried one yet so don’t know how well they work, but some people are saying they work pretty good. You can find the instructions on the Internet.

Are you getting your grab and go binders put together if you don’t already have one. If you do have one already go through it and make sure it is current.

Add more to your water and add a little to your money stash.

What I was able to get done.

I have been working on apples this week so far I have 7 quarts of apple pie filling, 53 pints of apple butter, 12 pints caramel apple butter,  was gifted a gallon bag of Oreos, a pint bag of cashews, 2-gallon bags of pretzels, bought a case of peaches and 25 pounds of sugar and got a load of wood.
