Superfoods have been around for ages and served a great nutrition source to our people and ancestors. The Incas, the Indians, the cowboys, and even samurais had their superfood.

As survivalists, these superfoods are priceless when we understand their great utility. A small piece of superfood can keep you alive and energized longer than you would believe.

Surviving a disaster, going off the grid or diving in the wilderness is much easier when you are carrying a superfood in your bug out bag.
Here are 5 superfoods you should start preparing:

1 – Pemmican

Pemmican is widely known in the survival community, notably thanks to this legendary book “The Lost Ways”. This superfood was used by our ancestors when our country was still a land of cowboys and Indians. It’s easy to make and have great potential within.

2 – Umeboshi Plums – The Samurai SuperFood

Used by the samurai to combat battle fatigue, umeboshi plums are strong in taste and have many medicinal qualities. Eating an umeboshi helps balance the acidic body thanks to its alkalizing effect. This superfood is used in Japan instead of aspirin to increase body energy, help with digestion and eliminate toxins.

3 – Kimchi

Kimchi is a famous fermented Korean food. Made mainly of cabbage, chili powder, garlic, salt and carrots, kimchi will last for months in your fridge. According to the Department of Food Science and Nutrition, It has many probiotic benefits as it strengthens the immune system, preserves the guts, has anti-aging effects and skin health benefits. It’s usually served with steamed rice.
4 – Homemade energy bars

This is your freestyle session. When making your energy bars, you will add the ingredients according to the nutritious effects you want it to have. The pillar ingredients for your energy bars are oats, powdered milk, dried fruits, water, and honey. You can create high protein bars and even 3000 calories bars, find what suits your needs.

 

5 – Hardtack

In 1588, the British Royal Navy provided each sailor 1 lb. of hardtack biscuits and a gallon of beer. These requirements created a huge demand and led a wide business in the ports to provide the daily hardtacks requirement for each ship. These biscuits have many names, they are known as sea biscuits, ship biscuits or survival bread.
Hardtacks requires 3 simple ingredients: flour, water, and salt. Even though they are not as nutritious as the superfoods above, they cost literally nothing to produce and, stored properly, they can last for decades.
