Sickness and injury in SHTF

This weeks show is a replay of a video we did back in late August when I had my appendix removed. Having to have emergency surgery led me to think about what sort of options would be available for something like this in a SHTF type situation.

Sometimes there just isn’t an answer for sickness and injury in a SHTF situation, and in today’s show the three of us discussed what some of those situations might be. We all try to be prepared for whatever might come our way, but sometimes we’ll need to play the cards we were dealt.

Today’s show was not meant to be a “you’re hosed if this or if that” show, it was more about recognizing these issues, and fixing (or avoiding them) if at all possible. By becoming more healthy now, and taking your health seriously can prevent having to deal with them when help is limited.

Preexisting Conditions

While some preexisting conditions and the need for prescription medications are a necessity, some can be avoided, and there may even some alternatives depending on the issue. The truth is, we never know what might happen and how it will unfold, but we need to be realistic about our situation.

The average lifespan is double what it was just 100 years ago, and that’s because of our advancements in healthcare and technology. any sort of SHTF event that took out the power grid would set us back to those days where simple issues (like my appendix) could not be dealt with.

The Affect on Others

Along with how sickness and injury might affect us in a SHTF scenario, we also talked about how it would affect everyone around you or in your group. With you being incapacitated it not only means you can’t fulfill your responsibilities, it mean someone needs to pick up your slack, and someone also needs to care for you.

This is also why the lone wolf idea isn’t a viable option. Without other people around to help with security, medical issues, or just daily tasks, your chances for survival diminish. There are some people that can head out into the woods and survival alone, but those people are far and few between.

Preventable Game Changers

Another thing to try and avoid are mistakes and game changing injuries we can prevent. Over confidence, stress and haste can lead to injuries that are 100% preventable. These days when we make a mistake medical help is close at hand, in a SHTF scenario that may not be the case.

The purpose of her contribution to the prepper world is to protect life and health and to ensure respect for the human being. As simple as that.
