Letter from a Prepper – The Item You Probably Don’t Have

Here is something that everyone should have in their first aid preps, but if you didn’t grow up on a farm; you probably don’t even know that it exists. That item is Vet Wrap. Vet Wrap is an adhesive bandage wrap that is nonsticky (yet sticks to its self), tough as nails, and easy to use. Farmers have been using this product on themselves for years. I’ve never understood why bandaging products for “human use” would be so far behind the times. Cloth wraps that go over gauze pads and those stupid rolls of white tape are absolutely useless in my humble opinion. Perhaps if you are laying around in a bed and not doing anything, they might work. But let’s be honest, in a survival situation, that isn’t the case for most of us.

I remember years ago when I split my thumb in half (right down the center) and had to have it sewed back together, the first thing I did when I got home was tear off that stupid hospital bandaging and redo it with Vet Wrap. I had to continue working and I didn’t need the damn thing coming apart every time I turned around, and I needed something that would protect it and keep the mud, grease, and cow shit out of the wound. Anytime I have a cut that is too big for a conventional band-aid, some gauze and a few rounds of vet wrap do the job.

Vet Wrap sticks to itself like super glue but isn’t sticky at all. It is a great product for applications where you need compression, like sprains and such. Many a weathered old farmer wraps their joints with this stuff. I’ve always said, “If I have enough Vet Wrap and whiskey, I can keep farming well past the age of 100”. It is by far the most versatile, easy to use, bulletproof bandaging material on the planet. To top it off, it’s pretty darn affordable too. It comes in every color in the rainbow. Obviously, for your survival medical kits, you might want to choose some more tactical colors. But the whatever colors you choose, this needs to be in your medical kit.
